What 𗫑 means
It means “livestock” in Tangut.
A manuscript of the New Laws, a legal text from Western Xia (Xixia), glosses it as “livestock.” Tangut is the language this script was made to write; this legal text preserves the character’s historical gloss.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It served the Western Xia state and its texts.
The Tangut script emerged in the 11th century as the official writing system of Western Xia, a state in what is now northwestern China. It served administration and translations of Buddhist works. Its design drew on Chinese and Khitan writing but represented the Tangut language.
𗫑 belongs to this state-sponsored script. Manuscripts continued the tradition after Western Xia; the latest known Tangut inscription is dated 1502.
Why is 𗫑 showing as a box?
A font without Tangut coverage cannot render it.
A browser or app without a Tangut font may show 𗫑 as an empty square or replacement mark. That mark is a fallback glyph: it reflects missing font coverage, not a different reading.
It is a historical Tangut word, at home in discussion of the language or its texts.
Without a Tangut-capable font, a recipient may see a square.

1Why does 𗫑 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
