What 𗪀 means
It means “to watch.” Its reconstructed reading is roughly “khu”: k with a puff of breath, then u as in “food.” In ²khu’₄, the extra marks show scholarly sound distinctions, not character strokes.
Tangut was spoken in Western Xia, a medieval state in northwestern China. Under its first emperor, Jingzong, the script was developed around 1036 for government and culture. Modeled on Chinese characters, it wrote a different language and Buddhist texts translated from Chinese and Tibetan. It remained in use under the Yuan and Ming after Western Xia fell, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming.
