Tangut character 𗫌

2765/6136

𗫌 is a Tangut character meaning “home” or “house”; in some compounds, the sense broadens to a household or settlement. Sent alone, it is best read as a reference to Tangut text or study, not as an emoji reaction. “Village” is a reading of a particular compound, not the character by itself.

What 𗫌 means

It means “home” or “house,” and can extend to a settlement.

𗫌 belongs to Tangut, the historical language of the Western Xia state in northwestern China. The script was created by imperial order around 1036 as part of state-building; one major project was a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of scriptures. It drew on Chinese writing and the script traditions of the neighboring Khitan people, but formed a distinct writing system.

A later witness is the 1502 Baoding dhāraṇī pillars: stone monuments inscribed with a Buddhist prayer formula called a dhāraṇī. They show Tangut writing used in religious and local settings after the Western Xia period.

Why can 𗫌 mean “village”?

Because compounds extend “home” to a cluster of homes.

The standalone word is glossed mainly as “home” or “house,” not one fixed English noun. In documented expressions, 𗫌𗫻 means “at home,” 𗫌𘐩 means “leaving home,” including in a monastic renunciation context, and 𗫌𘓐 refers to a family or household people.

In 𗞝𗫌, a compound with a word for outlying land, the pair is translated as “village,” “village district,” or “settlement.” This broader sense appears in Buddhist translations and secular Tangut writing; it comes from the compound’s context, not a modern reinterpretation of 𗫌.

What does 𗫌 mean when someone sends it?

Read it as a Tangut word or historical-script reference, not an emoji.

If it arrives alone, ask for context or a translation. Tangut characters work as writing signs rather than pictures of what they mean, so the strokes alone do not reveal “home.”

Fonts can draw Tangut characters in different historical styles. Without Tangut font support, an app may show a box or fallback glyph instead. As of 2026, that display remains font-dependent.

Specialist and historical; a bare send in general chat needs a gloss unless both people read Tangut.

“Village” is a compound reading; alone, 𗫌 means “home” or “house.”
