Tangut character 17BDB

3036/6136

𗯛 is a Tangut character, from a writing system distinct from Chinese; its Unicode label identifies the character, not its meaning. The Tangut script developed around 1036 under the first emperor of Western Xia (Xixia) to write the kingdom's language and translate Buddhist texts. Khitan writing provided a regional precedent.

What 𗯛 means

Its technical label identifies the character, not its Tangut meaning.

Tangut was the writing system of the Tangut language. Western Xia used it for records and to translate Buddhist texts.

Surviving texts include Buddhist sutras (scriptures), records, private documents, classics, military works, and literature. Use continued into the Yuan and Ming dynasties, after which Tangut became obsolete. Chinese writing influenced its forms and structure; Khitan, another writing system in the region, supplied a precedent.

Questions people ask

Why does 𗯛 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
