Tangut character 17BDD

3038/6136

𗯝 means “to translate” in Tangut and also names the seventh entry in the traditional ten Heavenly Stems, a calendar cycle. It belongs in Tangut dictionaries, calendrical references, or historical texts; sent alone in chat, its intended sense is unclear. Without a Tangut-capable font, it may appear as a box.

Text symbol

What 𗯝 means

It means “to translate” and also names the seventh Heavenly Stem.

A Heavenly Stem is one of ten names in a traditional East Asian calendar cycle. In a Tangut dictionary, 𗯝 has the verb sense “to translate”; in a stem list, it marks position seven. The surrounding text tells you which reading applies.

Where did this character come from?

It belongs to a writing system created for the Tangut language.

A later Chinese history credits official Yeli Renrong with designing the script in 1036. Under Western Xia, it was taught in schools and used for government records; Buddhist works translated from Tibetan and Chinese were block-printed in Tangut. The script took inspiration from Chinese writing, but Tangut is a distinct language and writing system. A possible influence from scripts used by the Khitan peoples remains debated, so visual resemblance alone does not prove descent.

After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued for centuries; the last known example is dated 1502.

What does it mean when someone sends it?

Usually, it marks a Tangut text or a specialist reference.

Alone in ordinary chat, it has no clear everyday reading. If the sender’s point depends on its meaning, ask for a plain-language gloss.

A font without a Tangut glyph may show a blank or replacement box. That changes the display, not the text’s meaning.

Best suited to historical, language, or calendrical discussion; alone in ordinary chat, it reads as an unexplained reference.

Without context, a recipient may mistake a missing-glyph box for a broken character.

Is 𗯝 an emoji?

No. It is a Tangut text character; its visible shape comes from a text font rather than emoji artwork.

Why does 𗯝 show as a box?

A font without the Tangut glyph cannot draw it, so some apps show an empty or replacement box. The character can still be present in the text.

Can I use 𗯝 as a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to the Tangut language. Tangut writing drew inspiration from Chinese forms, but the two writing systems are distinct.
