Tangut character for “flag”

3044/6136

An app’s character map can enter 𗯣 without a special keyboard, though display still needs a Tangut-capable font. Tangut vocabulary gives it the meaning “flag”; Unicode’s generated name identifies the glyph rather than translating it.

What 𗯣 means

Use a Unicode picker for one-off entry.

For regular Tangut text, use a Tangut-capable input method; ordinary keyboard layouts do not cover this script. Some online English–Tangut dictionaries also provide an input tool.

As of 2026, a browser can load a web font while another app may need the font installed locally. If 𗯣 shows as a box, that app lacks Tangut font coverage.

What does 𗯣 mean?

A Tangut dictionary lists 𗯣 with the meaning “flag.”

Tangut writing was developed for the Western Xia, a state ruled by Tanguts, around 1036, for administration and translation work that included Buddhist texts. Its characters were modeled on Chinese writing, but they represent the Tangut language; 𗯣 is not a Chinese character.

Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and early Ming dynasties after the Mongol conquest of 1227, then gradually left everyday use. Unicode’s generated name identifies this glyph by code point; it does not translate the Tangut word.

Historical and specialist; a lone glyph reads as a specimen or font test, not ordinary prose.

Do not use Chinese 旗 as a substitute; it is a gloss, not the Tangut glyph.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗯣 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
