tangut ideograph-17bed

Tangut ideograph 17BED

3054/6136

𗯭 is a Tangut glyph, but its Unicode label identifies the character rather than translating it or giving its historical reading. The Tangut script served the Western Xia state and its culture; its texts are studied as historical writing. A structural record breaks this glyph into two copies of 𘢬, but that structure does not reveal its meaning.

What 𗯭 means

𗯭 is a Tangut glyph; its Unicode label is not a translation. The label “Tangut Ideograph-17BED” identifies the encoded character; it does not translate it into English or provide a modern message sense. To learn its historical reading, consult a Tangut dictionary or text edition: the identifier alone does not supply a word.

A Tangut structural record analyzes 𗯭 as two copies of the component 𘢬. That explains how the sign is divided into parts, not what it means; the component is not a translation or a substitute for the whole character.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It served Western Xia government and cultural life. The script is attested in surviving writing from the eleventh century. The Western Xia state, also called Xixia, commissioned it to write the Tangut language and express a distinct state identity within a region shaped by Chinese and Tibetan traditions. Tangut records include official documents, books, Buddhist scriptures, inscriptions, and manuscripts.

After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties, two Chinese ruling periods, before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming period. During the script's scholarly recovery, excavated materials and bilingual texts helped scholars read it again. The Tangut, Khitan, and Jurchen scripts are connected as projects of neighboring states. Tangut uses structural principles also found in Chinese writing, but it is a distinct script; possible Khitan influence remains debated.

Historical and specialist; readers unfamiliar with Tangut cannot infer a reading from this glyph alone.

The Unicode label is an ID, not a translation.
