What 𗲠 means
In Tangut, 𗲠 can mean “empty” or “sky,” depending on context. The reading is ŋa. A 2025 study of Tangut biographies of the Buddhist teacher Atiśa treats that gloss as tentative.
The Tangut script wrote the Tangut language for Western Xia, a Tangut-led state, and served its government. It took shape under the first emperor about 1036; the earliest known surviving document is an official record dated 1072. Tangut writing continued in official, private, and Buddhist texts after Western Xia fell.
