What 𗳇 means

𗳇 is a text character from the Tangut script, used for the now-extinct Tangut language in the medieval Western Xia state. A font with Tangut coverage is needed to display it.
What does 𗳇 mean in Tangut writing?
It is a Tangut character; the attested gloss is for a compound. A scholarly reconstruction gives its pronunciation, which is a reading rather than a translation.
In an attested Tangut literary text, 𗳇𗳽 is translated as “hill.” That compound gloss does not establish that 𗳇 alone means “hill.”
The Tangut script served the Western Xia state from around the 11th century, for official records and diplomacy as well as Buddhist translations and block-printed books. Western Xia fell in 1227, but Tangut writing continued. The latest known examples are the Baoding pillars bearing Buddhist dhāraṇī—sacred formulas—dated 1502. The script's use shifted from government and religious writing to historical study and digital encoding.
What should I make of 𗳇 sent alone?
Read it as a reference to Tangut text or a font test. In a modern message, ask what the sender is pointing to; in a Tangut passage, use the surrounding word or phrase to interpret it.
Its tone comes from the surrounding text; alone, it reads as a script reference.
“Hill” is the gloss for 𗳇𗳽, not a safe translation for 𗳇 alone.
