What 𗳑 means
It is a Tangut character whose record gives a sound clue.
In Pearl in the Palm, a Chinese–Tangut glossary from the Xixia state (1190), 𗳑 is a sound clue for Chinese 墨 (“ink” in Mandarin). Scholars reconstruct its Tangut syllable as bẹ; another system writes mbẹi.
Why was the Tangut script created?
The state made it for official and cultural life.
The court ordered the script in 1036, likely for a Tangut Buddhist canon and state identity. It drew on Chinese methods but was not derived from Chinese; Khitan neighbors had developed scripts earlier. Tangut books covered Buddhist and secular works, while surviving material after the state fell in 1227 is mostly Buddhist.
