Tangut Ideograph 17CE3

3300/6136

𗳣 is a Tangut character with a scholarly reconstructed reading written bji̱²; that notation is a guide to an older sound, not an English translation. In a message, treat it as a reference to Tangut writing or a font check, and ask the sender if the context is missing.

What 𗳣 means

𗳣 is a Tangut character, not a one-word English gloss. A Tangut dictionary records its reconstructed reading as bji̱², a scholarly notation for an older sound rather than an English word. Tangut wordlists also show it inside longer sequences, so its surrounding characters matter.

Tangut was created under the Western Xia emperor around 1036 to write the Tangut language. It appeared in government, private, and religious texts, including Buddhist books, and continued after the dynasty fell. Scholars rediscovered the script in the late 19th century. Its blocky forms may remind you of Chinese, but Tangut is a separate script for a different language.

In a 2024 Tangut–Chinese comparison, Chinese characters such as 米, 密, 眉, 迷, and 蜜 appear as sound glosses alongside a reconstructed reading for the sequence 𗳣𗕥. They are pronunciation comparisons, not alternate spellings of 𗳣.

Someone sent 𗳣—what should I infer?

Treat a lone 𗳣 as a reference that needs context. If it arrives alone in chat, it gives little clue about the sender’s intent. It may point to a Tangut text, a font test, or interest in the script; ask which before treating it as a reply.

A reader unfamiliar with Tangut may not recognize the character. If the intended reference matters, include a plain-language explanation.

How do I type 𗳣?

Use a Unicode-aware picker or input method that supports Tangut. Enter U17CE3 in a tool that accepts code points; exact steps vary by operating system.

A font without Tangut coverage may show a box or fallback glyph; that is a display issue, not a different character. Tangut fonts can also differ in glyph shape.

Historical and specialist; in a casual message, its reference needs context.

Do not assume a lone 𗳣 is a greeting or reply.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗳣 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
