3379/6136

𗴲 is the Tangut word for “summer,” one of four season names in the Tangut script. A Tangut verse places it in the summer line, translated “Summer flourishes.” The script was made for the Western Xia state and stayed in use after the state fell.

What 𗴲 means

𗴲 means “summer” in Tangut.

Tangut is the language written in the Tangut script. A seasonal verse places 𗴲 in its summer line, translated “Summer flourishes,” alongside separate lines for spring, autumn, and winter.

What was the Tangut script for?

It was made to write Tangut and serve the Western Xia state.

Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia, ordered the Tangut script in 1036 as part of building the state and writing its language, Tangut. One likely aim was a Tangut edition of the Buddhist canon, a collected body of Buddhist scriptures. Tangut writing also carried official texts and other books. Its forms were visually inspired by Chinese writing, but the script was not derived from Chinese characters.

Western Xia fell in 1227, but Tangut writing outlived the state. A Buddhist Tangut inscription dated 1502 shows that the script continued to be written long afterward.

Why does 𗴲 appear as a box?

Your font may be missing Tangut coverage.

A missing-glyph box means the text is there but the font cannot draw Tangut. A Tangut-capable font changes the visible form, not the character.

For digital entry, use an operating-system or app Unicode method that accepts U17D32. The character is beyond the basic multilingual plane, so the method must support supplementary-plane characters.

Historical and specialized: its meaning is clear in Tangut text, but not from the glyph alone.

Without Tangut context, it will not read as a clear word for summer.

Questions people ask

Why does 𗴲 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𗴲 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
