What 𗶠 means
It writes the Tangut verb “sit.”
Chinese 坐 (Mandarin zuò, “to sit”) is a cognate: both words share an older origin. 坐 is a linguistic relative, not another spelling of 𗶠.
Why did Western Xia create Tangut writing?
It gave the state a script for records, translation, and identity.
Created around 1036–1037, the Tangut script became Western Xia's state script for records and translations, and a marker of Tangut identity. Accounts disagree over who devised it; its earliest surviving example is an official document dated 1072. Tangut scholars described their script as distinct in form but rooted in Chinese writing. Some researchers propose influence from the Khitan script, another northern writing system, but that link remains debated. After Western Xia fell to Mongol forces in 1227, Tangut writing continued: Buddha-statue inscriptions in Dunhuang's Mogao caves date to 1348, and a stone column at Baoding dates to 1502.

1Why does 𗶠 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
