Tangut character 𗶣

3492/6136

𗶣 is a character in the Tangut writing system, and its meaning depends on the word or sentence around it. One scholarly reconstruction gives its reading as me², a sound transcription rather than an English translation. Tangut writing was created for the Western Xia state and its books, including Buddhist scriptures.

What 𗶣 means

It is a Tangut character whose reading needs context.

One scholarly reconstruction gives its reading as me², a transcription of sound rather than an English gloss. That reading alone does not establish what it means in a particular passage.

If 𗶣 arrives by itself, ask for the Tangut word or sentence it came from; a single character cannot supply the missing context.

Why was Tangut writing created?

Tangut writing gave Western Xia a script for its language and books.

Around 1036, Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao ordered a writing system for the Tangut language. The script supported state identity and the production of Buddhist scriptures.

A manuscript fragment from Khara-khoto, a site where Tangut manuscripts were found, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut books also included Chinese translations, Confucian and military works, and literature. Tangut writing drew on Chinese writing and followed the example of Khitan state scripts, but it was a separate system.

Specialist and archival: it belongs in Tangut texts and manuscript study.

A lone 𗶣 cannot be translated reliably; ask for the word or passage.

Questions people ask

2

Is 𗶣 Chinese?

No. It belongs to the Tangut writing system. Chinese writing influenced its form, but this is not an ordinary Chinese character.

Why does 𗶣 show as a box?

The font used to display the text may not include Tangut characters. The box is a display problem, not a different character.
