What 𗸤 means
A Tangut character used for sound, not meaning. It records Chinese pronunciation, not a Chinese character.
The 12th-century Tangut dictionaries Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”) link it to 等, 燈 and 鐙 through Middle Chinese, a reconstructed sound system of an older Chinese stage.
Western Xia commissioned Tangut writing around 1036 for its language and state identity; translation of Buddhist scripture was likely a major aim. Chinese writing supplied the main visual model. Khitan scripts, created a century earlier, offered a regional precedent. Tangut texts include Buddhist works and Chinese classics in translation.
