What 𗹇 means
It means “ghost” in Tangut.
Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese character dictionary, a reference work for the script, lists 𗹇 as entry 0926; its English index gives the gloss “ghost.”
How was Tangut writing used?
Tangut writing was developed in 1036 for the language of Western Xia. It borrowed visual ideas from Chinese writing but was made to write Tangut, so Chinese pronunciation rules do not apply to this character. Schools taught the script, officials used it for records, and Buddhist works were translated and printed in it.
Writing persisted after Western Xia fell in 1227. A 2025 study identifies a pair of Buddhist pillars erected in Baoding in 1502, bearing short sacred texts, as the latest datable Tangut material known.
What does 𗹇 mean when someone sends it alone?
Treat it as a Tangut reference until the message adds context.
If a sender discusses Tangut, “ghost” may be the intended dictionary gloss. A bare glyph cannot tell you whether it is quoted, used as a label, or meant literally.
Historical and specialist: the Tangut gloss is clear, but a bare message leaves the sender’s purpose open.
