What 𗹱 means
A Tangut dictionary records its reading as xew. Its English index glosses the word as “a kind of grass,” without naming a species. xew is a scholarly spelling of Tangut sound, not an English word.
In 1036, the Tangut-ruled Western Xia state ordered a script for its own language as a mark of independence. Chinese writing shaped its square forms, but 𗹱 records a Tangut word. After the Mongol conquest of Western Xia in 1227, Tangut people in Baoding, northern China, used the script for Buddhist prayer inscriptions; two stone pillars there date to 1502.
