What 𗹲 means
A Tangut dictionary and sentence context are needed to read it.
Tangut is a character-based writing system for the Tangut language. Its Unicode name identifies this entry by code point; it is not an English translation. The glyph's outline alone is not a reliable guide to its meaning.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It supported Western Xia state identity and translation.
The script was created in 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor, Li Yuanhao, to support a distinct state identity and prepare a Tangut Buddhist Canon, a large collection of sacred texts. Its makers followed a Khitan precedent: a neighboring people had also created scripts for state use. Tangut borrowed some Chinese character-construction principles, but its characters were not one-for-one Chinese equivalents.
A manuscript fragment from Khara-Khoto, an archaeological site in Inner Mongolia, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Its translated secular text shows that Tangut writing served purposes beyond scripture. After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued through the Yuan and Ming dynasties, then was obsolete by the end of the Ming.
