What 𗹼 means
It means “kidney” in Tangut. Its form combines the whole character 𗹭 (“high”) with the right-hand part of 𗥛 (“bone”).
Why was Tangut writing created?
To write the Tangut language and serve the Western Xia state. Created around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor, the script drew on Chinese-character structure. It appears in official records and cultural works, including books, Buddhist sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties, before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming.
