Tangut character 𗺐

𗺐 is a Tangut character glossed “to strangle.” Tangut had its own script, used by the Western Xia state and for Buddhist translations. It is a historical word, not a cue for a message’s tone.

What 𗺐 means

It is glossed “to strangle” in Tangut.

A 2008 Tangut dictionary gives this gloss under entry L2548; an index maps that entry to 𗺐. The Tangut language had its own script, influenced by Chinese writing but distinct from it.

By 1036, the Western Xia state used Tangut writing for government records and schooling. Its earliest surviving example is an official document dated 1072. Buddhist texts were translated into Tangut too. The script remained in use after the state fell in 1227; a surviving inscription from 1502 is a later example.
