What 𗻒 means

𗻒 is a character in the Tangut script, which wrote the Tangut language. A Tangut lexicon records a reconstructed reading, dźjwã²—a scholarly estimate of its pronunciation, not an English translation. To understand its sense, read it as part of its Tangut word and surrounding passage.

The Tangut script was created around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor. It helped the state support a Tangut Buddhist canon and establish a written identity distinct from Song China.

Tangut texts range beyond court use: surviving material includes Buddhist and secular writing, translations from Chinese, legal texts, and manuscripts from Khara-khoto. One manuscript praising a Chinese emperor probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut continued in Yuan and Ming texts after Western Xia fell; the latest known inscription is dated 1502. The script took visual ideas from Chinese writing and followed a precedent set by Khitan scripts, while remaining a separate script for Tangut.

What does it mean when someone sends 𗻒?

Read it as Tangut text; alone, it cannot supply the word’s meaning. If a message contains only this character, ask for the Tangut word or passage; the reconstructed reading is not a translation.

Tangut manuscripts were written vertically, with columns running right to left. In ordinary digital text layout as of 2026, the character is normally shown in a left-to-right line. The selected font supplies its visible strokes, and Tangut glyph forms vary across historical sources and modern editions.

Historical and specialist; without its Tangut word, this character is hard to interpret.

A reconstructed reading is a pronunciation estimate, not an English translation.
