tangut ideograph-17f0e

Tangut ideograph 17F0E

3855/6136

𗼎 is a character of the Tangut, also called Xixia, script; it has no settled one-word English gloss on its own. In a Tangut text, read it in context; sent alone, it looks like a reference to the script. A square means your font lacks Tangut coverage.

What 𗼎 means

No settled English gloss is established for 𗼎 alone.

Several readings have been reconstructed, but none supplies a settled translation for the character by itself. A documented Tangut line starts with 𗼎𗾧 and is translated as “The brave and strong Tangut (Minya) go on parade.” That gives 𗼎 a lexical context, not a universal definition.

The Tangut (Xixia) script was created around 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao for state use. It supported official records and a Buddhist canon, while expressing a distinct identity alongside Song China. Its earliest known surviving example is an official document from Guazhou dated 1072. Later works included Buddhist texts, translations of Chinese works, laws, dictionaries, and literature; a 1502 inscription shows writing continued after Western Xia fell. Chinese writing was its main model. Some scholars see inspiration from Khitan, while others find no close structural link.

Why does 𗼎 show as a square?

A box usually means your font lacks Tangut coverage.

This is a rendering issue, not a different character. As of 2026, a browser webfont can display Tangut on one page, while another app may still need an installed Tangut font.

For input, enter the hexadecimal value in a Unicode-aware editor. UTF-16, a common text format, stores 𗼎 as a surrogate pair—two code units for one displayed character—so code-unit indexing can split it. Use code-point-aware handling when editing or storing it.

Specialist and historical; outside a Tangut text, it reads as a reference to the script.

Do not infer its meaning from its shape or treat it as Chinese; context matters.

Why does 𗼎 appear as a box?

A box means the selected font lacks a Tangut glyph. A browser webfont may display it on a web page, but another app can still need an installed Tangut font.

Can software count 𗼎 as two characters?

Yes, in UTF-16. It is stored as a surrogate pair, so one displayed character occupies two code units; use code-point-aware functions when indexing or slicing.
