What 𗾤 means

It means “to ask” in Tangut. The Wén Hǎi (“Sea of Writing”), a historical Tangut dictionary, records that gloss.

Created around 1036 for Western Xia state identity and writing, Tangut carried government records, books, and Buddhist translations. Its use continued into the Ming; an inscription dated 1502 survives.

Chinese writing shaped Tangut character-making, but the script remained separate. Neighboring Khitan states created scripts about a century earlier, another regional example of state-backed writing.
