What 𗿲 means

𗿲 is glossed as a kind of bird. The gloss does not name the species. Two scholarly reconstructions of its pronunciation are written śwô and śio.

Tangut rulers commissioned a script for state use around 1036. Its earliest surviving example is an official dispatch from 1072. The script carried government records and translations of Buddhist and Chinese texts. Chinese writing principles influenced its design; whether Khitan writing also influenced it remains debated.

A historical character from Tangut written vocabulary.

It names a bird in Tangut; it is not a drawing of one.
