What 𘀗 means
Tangut texts use this glyph for the word “heaven.”
Created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor, the Tangut script gave the state a writing system for Buddhist texts and a political identity distinct from Song China. Its square forms drew on Chinese writing, but Tangut is a separate script.
The Tangut Thousand Character Text pairs 𘀗, “heaven,” with 𗿀, “earth,” to form “heaven and earth.” On Western Xia cash coins dated 1171–1193, 𘀗 appears in the Tangut spelling of Qianyou (乾祐), an era name translated “Heaven Aids.”
Why does 𘀗 look Chinese?
Tangut was shaped by Chinese writing, but it is a separate script.
Tangut characters reuse stroke components and usually fit square forms, so 𘀗 can resemble an unfamiliar Chinese character. The script is not derived from Han characters; the resemblance does not give this glyph a Chinese reading.
Tangut was rediscovered in the late 19th century and largely deciphered through scholarship in the early 20th century.
What does it mean when someone sends 𘀗?
Treat it as a Tangut reference, not a mood.
As of 2026, Tangut is chiefly encountered in historical and scholarly material. Sent alone, 𘀗 points to the script, Western Xia, or the word “heaven”; the glyph by itself does not establish a personal message.
Historical and scholarly; sent alone, it reads like a Tangut quotation or a sign of interest.
Its Chinese-influenced shape does not make it a Chinese character.
