Tangut character 180DD

4318/6136

𘃝 is a Tangut character, and its Unicode label does not tell you which Tangut word it represented. Dictionary records give reconstructed pronunciations rather than an English gloss; in a message, treat it as Tangut text and ask for context if the intended word matters.

What 𘃝 means

Its Tangut dictionary entry gives readings, not a translation.

For the Tangut reading of 𘃝, dictionary records list forms such as wji¹, vi₃, vi̯e¹, and wi¹. These are scholarly notations for reconstructed pronunciations, not English definitions. As of 2026, the Wiktionary entry lists readings but no English gloss.

In a message, treat it as Tangut writing or an excerpt, not a ready-made reaction. Ask the sender for context if you need to know which word they intended.

What did Tangut writing serve?

It served Western Xia as a state and literary script.

The Western Xia script was created by imperial order for writing Tangut, the state's language. References date its use to 1036–1502. It appeared in official records, Buddhist translations, dictionaries, and books printed from carved wooden blocks. That range dates the script overall, not the first surviving appearance of 𘃝.

Tangut texts continued in religious works after Western Xia fell. The script drew on Chinese writing conventions, but it was a separate system for another language; Tangut characters are not Chinese spellings.

Will 𘃝 display in every font?

A blank box may mean your font lacks Tangut coverage.

A text character depends on a font that contains its glyph. As of 2026, Tangut font documentation lists Noto Serif Tangut, Tangut Yinchuan, and BabelStone Tangut Wenhai as fonts with Tangut support.

If Unicode input succeeds but the character looks blank or boxed, the text may still be present; the selected font may simply be unable to draw it.

Sent alone, it does not identify a word or a reaction.

Why does 𘃝 appear as a box?

Font support. The selected font may lack Tangut coverage; a font that contains the script can draw the same encoded character.

Is 𘃝 Chinese?

No. It belongs to Tangut writing, a separate script for the Tangut language. Chinese writing influenced its conventions, but this is not a Chinese character.
