tangut ideograph-18123

Tangut Ideograph 18123

4388/6136

𘄣 is a character in the historical Tangut writing system; its number is only a catalog ID. A medieval Tangut dictionary records it as an entry, though that record alone does not explain its meaning in plain language. To use it in text today, you need a Tangut-aware input method and a font that can display it.

What 𘄣 means

The number is an inventory label, not a translation.

𘄣 appears as entry 6.113 in the Sea of Writing, a Tangut rhyming dictionary compiled in the mid-12th century. That places the character in a dictionary, but the index entry alone does not give a plain-language gloss.

An imperial order created the Tangut script in 1036 for the Tangut language. Its forms drew on the style of Chinese writing, but it was a distinct writing system used for Western Xia diplomacy and for translations of Chinese classics and Buddhist texts. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227: a Buddhist imprint from 1247 and a Buddhist compendium completed in 1302 are documented. These dates track the script's historical setting, not a change in this character's meaning.

Why is 𘄣 blank or boxed?

Your font or app may lack Tangut coverage.

As of 2026, a Tangut input-method project documents that some mobile apps fail to show Tangut characters even when the text remains valid Unicode. The project lists Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan Beta as fallback fonts; a box points to font coverage or app support.

Historical and specialist; its natural setting is Tangut texts or script study.

Treat the numeric label as an inventory ID, not a translation.

1

Why does 𘄣 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
