Text symbol

What 𘄩 means

It describes striking someone or something. A Tangut-to-Chinese dictionary by Li Fanwen identifies it as a verb. Tangut was the language of Western Xia; this square glyph is not Chinese writing.

Why was Tangut writing created?

To give Tangut its own state script. Ruler Li Yuanhao commissioned it; it was promulgated in 1036. Modeled on Chinese writing, its characters appeared in state records and Buddhist translations. Tangut writing outlived Western Xia: it appears on the Cloud Platform gateway at Juyong Pass, built in 1345.
