Tangut character 1813F

4416/6136

𘄿 marks a chapter, section, or ordered item in Tangut writing; context decides the best English gloss. The Xixia script used it in Buddhist divisions and communal rules, while one contract passage suggests “quality” or “rank.” In that passage, the intended character may instead be 𗓱, meaning “if.”

Text symbol

What 𘄿 means

It marks a chapter, section, or ordered item in a Tangut text.

Tangut writing was introduced in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia (Xixia). It supported state-building, a written identity apart from Song China, and a Buddhist canon. Tangut texts also included translations of Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist works, as well as Confucian, military, legal, and literary writing.

The English gloss changes with the setting. Buddhist title lists use 𘄿 as a division label; a communal rule uses 𗈪𘄿 for “one item,” “chapter,” or “order.” One contract passage is glossed “quality” or “rank,” though its study says the writer may have intended 𗓱, meaning “if.”

What does it mean if someone sends 𘄿?

Without its source, read it as a fragment of Tangut text.

A reader familiar with Chinese characters may recognize Tangut’s square designs and some similar principles of construction, but that does not make Tangut Chinese or make this character readable as Chinese. Use the surrounding Tangut text and document type to judge the gloss.

The Western Xia state fell to Mongol armies in 1227, but later Tangut materials, especially Buddhist texts, also survive. If 𘄿 displays as a box or looks different from a reference, the font may lack Tangut coverage or draw the glyph in another style.

Historical and textual; at home in Tangut manuscripts, title catalogues, and archival displays.

In a contract, do not settle on “quality” or “rank” too quickly; the passage may instead call for 𗓱, “if.”

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘄿 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
