Tangut Ideograph 17799

𗞙 is a Tangut character glossed as “small cup.” It belongs in Tangut text or a script-focused discussion; by itself, it is unlikely to tell a modern reader “cup.”

Text symbol

What 𗞙 means

It is glossed as “small cup” in Tangut. A historical definition describes a vessel used for drinking tea or wine.

The Tangut script was created around 1036 for Western Xia, a state in northwestern China, as part of its state-building.

Tangut writing served government and Buddhist learning; its texts included a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. After Western Xia fell, people continued to write Tangut for centuries in official, private, and religious texts. It fell out of use by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Why does it resemble Chinese writing?

Tangut borrowed some Chinese writing conventions but remained a distinct script. The two systems share brush-style strokes and some ways of combining parts.

One documented analysis builds 𗞙 from the top of 𗝎 (“bowl”), a side of 𘄿 (“chapter”) for sound, and the right side of 𘊟 (“silver”).

Tangut also drew on Chinese-influenced writing and earlier scripts made by its neighboring Khitan people. That history does not make this glyph a Chinese character.

What does 𗞙 signal in a modern message?

It signals Tangut-script interest; its cup gloss needs context. In a historical quotation, language lesson, or script-focused design, it belongs to Tangut material. If someone sends it without context, ask what they mean before reading it as a joke, code, or Chinese word.

Use plain words or a familiar cup symbol when a message needs to be understood broadly.

Historical and scholarly; opaque in ordinary chat.

By itself, it is unlikely to read as “cup” to someone unfamiliar with Tangut.

Why is 𗞙 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
