Tangut character 18174

What 𘅴 means

It means “to make a detailed inquiry.”

Li Fanwen's Tangut dictionary reconstructs its reading as ljwa¹, a scholarly notation written in Latin letters. The inventory label TANGUT IDEOGRAPH-18174 is not a translation: the gloss gives the meaning, while ljwa¹ is useful when following that reconstruction.

Why was Tangut script created?

It supported Western Xia state-building and Buddhist translation.

Tangut script was created around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor, ruler of the Tangut kingdom, to support a Tangut Buddhist canon and a distinct state identity. In the 12th-century Wén Hǎi (“Sea of Writing”), a Tangut dictionary, 𘅴 appears in a character chain under 𘄻. Tangut writing carried Buddhist, legal, official, private, and literary texts, including translations from Chinese and Tibetan. It survived into the Yuan and Ming dynasties and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Why does 𘅴 look like a box?

A missing Tangut font is the usual cause.

This text character needs a font with Tangut coverage. When the active font lacks it, a fallback box appears; the character itself has not changed. A font that supports Tangut can display it.

In ordinary chat, sending it signals interest in Tangut or historical scripts; readers unfamiliar with the script may need an explanation.

Without Tangut font support, the recipient may see a box instead of the character.

1

Why does 𘅴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
