tangut ideograph-181fa

Tangut character 181FA

4603/6136

𘇺 is a Tangut character translated as “emperor’s son-in-law” in Li Fanwen’s 2008 Tangut–Chinese dictionary. Western Xia, the Tangut kingdom, commissioned its script in 1036 to translate Buddhist scripture and mark state identity. The script drew on Chinese writing but remained separate; Tangut rulers followed neighboring Khitan rulers, who had created scripts a century earlier. Tangut texts continued after Western Xia fell, into the 16th century.

Why does 𘇺 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
