What 𘈱 means
The sources disagree; the older passage gives a different clue. Li Fanwen’s 2008 Tangut dictionary calls it “bored, worried.” The medieval Tangut dictionary Sea of Writing describes a person nearing death whose breathing is suppressed. A 2020 discussion tentatively suggests “semi-conscious” and argues that the shorter gloss misses the passage’s context.
Tangut writing was developed under Western Xia around 1036 for administration and Buddhist translation. Medieval texts include official, religious, and translated works. The script remained in use after Western Xia, later fell out of use, and was rediscovered by scholars. Its design drew on Chinese and Khitan traditions, but Tangut is a distinct script.
Historical Tangut writing; read its sense from the surrounding passage.
Do not treat “bored, worried” as a settled translation.
