What 𘊙 means
It names the Tangut entry glossed “fly and mosquito.”
Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary lists this character as entry L2244 and gives the English gloss “fly and mosquito.” The short gloss does not settle how the word fits a particular passage; the surrounding Tangut text matters.
Tangut was Western Xia’s language; the state lay in what is now northwestern China. Around 1036, its first emperor, Li Yuanhao, ordered scholars including Yeli Renrong to develop a script for a distinct state identity, drawing on Chinese writing. One proposed goal was translating the Buddhist canon, the collection of Buddhist scriptures, into Tangut. Surviving works range from Buddhist scriptures and translations of Chinese and Tibetan classics to state records, dictionaries, inscriptions, and private documents. The script continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties after Western Xia fell, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming.
