What 𘊚 means
𘊚 has a reconstructed reading; pronunciation alone is not a translation. In a scholarly Tangut reconstruction, the reading is written we¹: one syllable, roughly a w-like glide into e; superscript ¹ marks a reconstructed tone category. This is a proposed pronunciation, not an English translation.
The Tangut script was created in 1036 for the Western Xia state, official record-keeping, and a Tangut collection of Buddhist scriptures. An official Tangut document from 1072 is among the earliest surviving texts. These dates belong to the script and its surviving record, not to 𘊚 itself.
Why does 𘊚 resemble Chinese writing?
Tangut draws on Chinese and Khitan writing, yet remains a separate script. The resemblance comes from shared design traditions, not a Chinese reading for 𘊚. The Khitan were another people with their own writing tradition. Tangut characters can combine components that suggest meaning or sound rather than picture an object.
Tangut writing also marked cultural distinction from Song China. It continued after the Western Xia state fell in 1227, and a Tangut inscription from 1502 records later use. Those dates describe the script's history, not a change in this character's known reading.
Historical and specialist; the reconstructed reading needs Tangut context.
Do not read we¹ as the English word “we”; it is reconstructed Tangut pronunciation, not a translation.
