Tangut character for one

5029/6136

𘎤 is the Tangut character for the number one. Tangut was the script of the Western Xia (Xixia) kingdom, separate from Chinese writing; in a documented Buddhist name transcription, the same character represents a sound instead.

Text symbol

What 𘎤 means

Its meaning is the numeral “one.” A scholarly reconstruction writes its historical reading as *tjɨ¹; the asterisk marks a form inferred from linguistic evidence.

The Tangut writing system was created under the first Western Xia emperor around 1036 CE for Tangut, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken from about the 11th to the 16th century. Tangut texts served government, private, and religious life, including sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. After Western Xia fell, the script remained in use under the Yuan and Ming dynasties before becoming obsolete.

What does it mean when someone sends 𘎤?

Ask what text or source it came from. A one-character message does not explain why the sender chose it; ask for context before reading a tone into it.

A published Tangut transcription of the Buddhist teacher Trilowa, also known as Tilopa, uses 𘎤𘜘𗓽𘎧. There, 𘎤 contributes to the name’s sound rather than meaning “one.”

Why does Tangut look like Chinese?

Tangut is a separate script for its own language. Its characters resemble Chinese writing, but they represent Tangut, a Tibeto-Burman language.

Tangut books traditionally used vertical columns, read from top to bottom and right to left, a layout also used in Chinese writing. That is a regional writing convention; 𘎤 remains a Tangut character.

Historical and scholarly; meaningful when a Tangut text or script is in view.

A Chinese-like appearance does not make it Chinese.
