tangut ideograph-183bc

Tangut ideograph 183BC

5053/6136

𘎼 means “release,” “abandon,” or “escape” in Tangut. A Tangut translation of the Buddhist Flower Garland Sutra uses it in a sentence about releasing treasure for others to see. The similar-looking 𘂴 instead carries a “hang, tail, or down” gloss.

What 𘎼 means

Release, abandon, or escape.

Specialist Tangut transcription records the character’s reading as nwə¹.

The Tangut script was created under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 to write the Tangut language and appears in official, private, and religious texts. It resembles Chinese ideographs but is a separate script. Historical sources preserve variant drawings of 𘎼, so a changed shape alone does not establish a different character.

Historical and specialist in register.

For “hang down,” 𘂴 is a separate character.

Why does 𘎼 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
