What 𘏂 means
It is glossed as “convulsion” in Tangut. Li Fanwen’s 2008 Tangut dictionary index lists it as entry 5159 and gives the reconstructed scholarly romanization kjwij.
Under Western Xia’s first emperor, Tangut writing was created around 1036 to represent the state and write Buddhist scripture. The earliest surviving Tangut document is dated 1072. The script was inspired by Chinese writing; the Khitan people had developed scripts earlier, while Tangut remained distinct. It was used for Buddhist, legal, official and secular texts. Tangut writing continued after the Mongol conquest in 1227, and a Tangut inscription is dated 1502. These dates describe the script’s history, not a proven change in this glyph’s meaning.
As of 2026, Tangut work is chiefly scholarly and includes digital type design.
A font without Tangut coverage may show a replacement box instead of 𘏂.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘏂 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
