What 𘑜 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “oblique,” or slanted.
A Tangut dictionary (a reference book for the language) maps this character to entry 0780 in Li Fanwen’s dictionary, glossed in English as “oblique.” “Slanted” is a plain-language paraphrase of that gloss.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It served the Western Xia state and Tangut Buddhism. The Tangut script was created around 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao. It supported official and cultural work, including a Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures—in Tangut, and helped distinguish Tangut identity from neighboring Song-dynasty China.
A Tangut manuscript from Khara-Khoto, an abandoned city, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Surviving works include Buddhist scriptures, translations from Chinese or Tibetan, Confucian classics, encyclopedias, military treatises and literature.
The script continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming era. It drew on Chinese writing and developed alongside Khitan script traditions while remaining a distinct system.
Historical and specialist; its meaning is best understood through Tangut texts and dictionaries.
It belongs to Tangut writing, a distinct script influenced by Chinese writing.
