What 𘑠 means
Tangut lexicons gloss 𘑠 as “calf.” It belongs to Tangut writing, a separate script created for the Tangut language rather than Chinese.
Tangut writing appeared around 1036 as the state script of Western Xia. Chinese writing influenced its design; possible Khitan influence, from another regional script, remains debated.
The earliest known Tangut document is an official record from 1072. The script served state records, Buddhist translations, and private texts. It continued after the Mongol conquest in 1227; an inscription from 1502 is a later example.
Tangut source variants can give this character different glyph designs.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘑠 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
