What 𘔥 means
One dictionary gloss cannot settle the passage’s translation.
This character belongs to the Tangut script, a square writing system for the Tangut language used in the Western Xia state. One dictionary entry gives a verb meaning “join”; text-based evidence also associates that entry with attacking, a shield, covering, and dying. These readings may come from homophones (different words with the same sound) or from different historical uses, so the bare glyph does not settle an English translation. Scholars reconstruct its pronunciation differently.
The Tangut court commissioned the script around 1036 for administration and cultural distinction. Surviving records begin in the 11th century and include official, Buddhist, legal, and literary texts. Chinese writing influenced Tangut, but readers of Chinese could not simply read Tangut text. Khitan and Jurchen were neighboring medieval script traditions.
Historical and specialist: it belongs in Tangut text or a discussion of the script, not as casual conversational tone.
