What 𘔨 means
It is glossed as “to cry bitterly.”
A Chinese–Tangut dictionary indexes this Tangut character as 5348 and gives that gloss. It translates the sense of a Tangut word, rather than describing the character’s strokes.
Tangut script was devised around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor for state-building and Buddhist scriptures in the Tangut language. After Western Xia fell to Mongol rule, the script continued through the Yuan and Ming dynasties in official, private, and religious texts, including translations from Chinese and Tibetan. It drew visual and structural inspiration from Chinese writing and followed the neighboring Khitan people’s example of creating state scripts, while remaining a distinct script.
What does it mean if someone sends 𘔨?
The glyph alone does not reveal the sender’s intent.
In a Tangut sentence, the dictionary entry is a starting point; by itself, the character does not tell you why someone chose it. Ask the sender if the meaning matters.
Why does 𘔨 appear as a box?
Your font or app cannot display the Tangut glyph.
The underlying text still contains 𘔨; the box is a display fallback. In a 2025 note, Tangut IME Online reported that some mobile apps did not display Tangut text.
Historical and specialist: this character belongs in Tangut text or a scholarly reference.
The dictionary gloss alone cannot tell you why someone chose it in a message.

1Why does 𘔨 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
