What 𘔫 means
It usually means “poor” or “impoverished.”
The character belongs to Tangut, the language of the Western Xia state. Its reconstructed reading is written lụ² in scholarly transcription; Tangut writing was shaped in a Chinese-character environment, but this is not a Chinese reading.
Why was Tangut writing made?
It served Western Xia’s government, education, and religion.
In 1036–1037, the Western Xia court established and promoted Tangut as a state script. Officials used it for records, schools taught it, and translators produced Buddhist texts with it. The earliest surviving example is an official document sent to a military official in Guazhou in 1072.
After the Western Xia fell to Mongol armies in 1227, Tangut writing continued. The last known examples are Buddhist prayer pillars erected in 1502. Tangut and Khitan were distinct state-backed scripts shaped in a Chinese-character environment; their characters are not interchangeable.
Why can 𘔫 be read as “alone”?
Only in one damaged historical passage.
In a Khara-Khoto household register, scholars debated whether a damaged form was 𘔫, “poor,” or 𘈳, “alone” or “widowed.” The surrounding personal name made the second reading more plausible. This is a manuscript ambiguity, not a second everyday meaning for 𘔫.
Historical and specialist: 𘔫 belongs to Tangut-language texts, not everyday modern writing.
Chinese-influenced shapes do not make it readable as Chinese.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 𘔫 appear as a box?
It is usually a font-coverage problem: the character is Tangut text, so your font or app needs Tangut glyphs. A box is a missing-glyph placeholder, not another character.
