tangut ideograph-1852c

Tangut character 1852C

𘔬 is a Tangut character, but its computer label identifies the glyph rather than giving its word meaning. Read it in surrounding Tangut text or a specialist dictionary; the script moved from Western Xia state use into Buddhist and other writing. If it displays as a square, the font may lack Tangut support.

What 𘔬 means

Its computer label identifies the glyph, not its word meaning.

𘔬 is a Tangut character in the Xixia script. Its shape and Unicode label do not give a dependable English gloss; read its lexical value from surrounding Tangut text or a specialist dictionary.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave the Western Xia state an official script for Tangut.

The script was created in 1036 as part of Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao's state-building program; Yeli Renrong is associated with its implementation. The earliest extant example cited in modern scholarship is an official document sent to a military official in Guazhou in 1072.

Its purpose soon exceeded administration: the state sponsored a Tangut Buddhist Canon and used the script to express state identity. Surviving manuscripts from the 12th or early 13th century include Buddhist scriptures, official and private texts, and translations from Chinese and Tibetan. Tangut writing continued in later dynasties after the Western Xia fell, but eventually became obsolete. Tangut characters use design principles also found in Chinese writing, but the script is distinct. Possible influence from Khitan writing has been proposed, but remains uncertain.

How do I type or display 𘔬?

Use a Tangut input scheme and a font that covers Tangut.

RIME is a framework for custom input methods. A Tangut scheme can take phonetic readings, stroke sequences, or four-corner codes (shape-based lookup), then offer Unicode candidates to select; ordinary keyboards have no dedicated key for this character.

If 𘔬 appears as an empty box or vanishes, the app may lack a Tangut-capable font. That affects display, not the character stored in the text.

A historical-script character for Tangut texts, dictionary work, or testing Tangut font coverage.

A box usually means the font lacks Tangut coverage, not that the text contains another character.

Questions people ask

2

Why does a Tangut character show as a square?

Most likely, the app's font lacks Tangut coverage. A Tangut-capable font lets the character display; the box is a placeholder, not the character's meaning.

Is Tangut a Chinese character?

No. Tangut is a separate script for the historical Tangut language. Its design shares principles with Chinese writing, but the scripts are distinct and not interchangeable.
