What 𘔭 means
It means “money” or “coin” in Tangut.
On Western Xia coin inscriptions, it closes the four-character phrase translated “precious coin.” The related character 𘏨 means “treasure”; together, the characters name treasure and money within the inscription.
Why does 𘔭 appear on Western Xia coins?
Tangut rulers used their script in public life. The Western Xia was a state ruled by Tangut people. Its court promulgated Tangut writing in 1036 for state records, teaching, and translations; using the language’s own script also marked cultural independence.
A coin from the Da’an reign period provides a dated public example of 𘔭 in an inscription in the late 11th century. It connects the word directly to the state’s currency.
Historical and scholarly; it points to Tangut language or Western Xia coinage.
