What 𘗦 means

It is a Tangut character with a dictionary gloss “a surname.”

Unicode links 𘗦 to catalog entry L2008-5255. BabelStone's index to Li Fanwen's 2008 Tangut–Chinese Dictionary lists that entry under “a surname.” This is a lexical category, not a complete translation for every passage.

Tangut, also called Xixia, is the historic script of the Tangut language. It was created under Western Xia's first emperor about 1036 CE. Surviving writing includes official, private, and religious material: books, sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. Writing continued under the Yuan and Ming after Western Xia fell to the Mongols, but the script was obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Tangut was rediscovered in the late 19th century; the scholar N. A. Nevskij's work helped decipher it in the early 20th century.

Is 𘗦 a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to the distinct Tangut script.

Tangut glyphs can resemble Chinese ideographs, but Unicode describes the scripts as unrelated. A Chinese dictionary will not identify 𘗦 by visual resemblance alone.

Tangut, Khitan, and Jurchen were separate scripts used by regional states during overlapping centuries. That shared historical setting is not evidence that 𘗦 descends from either of the others.

What does it mean if someone sends 𘗦 alone?

Ask which text, dictionary, or font project it comes from.

Without surrounding Tangut words, the dictionary gloss cannot tell you the character's role in a passage. It could be a quotation, an identification prompt, or a display test; the source decides which.

Specialist, archival, and technical: it belongs to Tangut reading, dictionary lookup, and font work.

A surname gloss is a category, not a translation of every passage.

Treat it as an identification prompt or quotation; the glyph alone supplies no conversational context.

Why does 𘗦 show as a box?

When a font lacks Tangut coverage, 𘗦 can display as a box or replacement mark. That is a display problem; the encoded character remains the same.
