What 𘗵 means
For one character, use the palette above. For longer Tangut text, a Tangut-specific input method or character picker is the practical route.
What does 𘗵 mean?
Its Unicode name is a code label, not a translation. Tangut was the language; Tangut script was its writing system. The glyph’s lexical value needs a Tangut dictionary entry or surrounding text.
Why did Tangut writing exist?
It gave the Western Xia state writing for Tangut. Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered the script in 1036; accounts credit his official Yeli Renrong with its design. A distinct state script marked Tangut political identity and served government correspondence. The script also carried Buddhist sutras and Confucian works in translation.
Its square characters borrow Chinese-style strokes but write Tangut, not Chinese. Writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; the latest dated specimen is a Buddhist stele from 1502.
