tangut ideograph-185f7

Tangut character for skirt

5624/6136

𘗷 means “skirt” in Tangut, the language of the Western Xia state. Introduced in 1036, Tangut writing served state correspondence and Buddhist translations and helped mark a distinct Tangut identity. Its forms were inspired by Chinese writing, while the court followed an earlier script model from the neighboring Khitan people. Tangut writing outlasted Western Xia, which fell in 1227; a surviving inscription is dated 1502.
