Tangut Character 18651

5714/6136

𘙑 is a Tangut character glossed as “capture.” Introduced in 1036 for the medieval Western Xia state's records, the Tangut script later carried Buddhist translations into print. Religious use lasted after the state fell; a known inscription dates to 1502. The script drew on Chinese writing, but writes Tangut, not Chinese.

What 𘙑 means

It was inspired by Chinese writing, but became a distinct script.

Western Xia rulers used Tangut for their language, records, schools, and Buddhist books. Their neighbors, the Khitan people, had created two scripts a century earlier. Tangut books include translations from Chinese and Tibetan, as well as original works in Tangut.

A historical dictionary entry; read its gloss in Tangut context.

Chinese-inspired design does not make it a Chinese character.

Why does 𘙑 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
