What 𘚟 means
It is a Tangut character; its exact sense depends on context.
A Tangut dictionary reconstructs its old reading in the scholarly notation gju: an estimate of its historical sound. That reading alone does not choose an English meaning; the Tangut sentence does.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It was created for the Western Xia state's political and written life. Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script in 1036 as part of state-building for the Western Xia (Xixia), a medieval Tangut kingdom. A major aim was a Tangut Buddhist canon—the collected Buddhist scriptures—and a written identity distinct from the Song dynasty, the neighboring Chinese state.
Chinese writing influenced Tangut character shapes and design principles, but Tangut remained a distinct script. An undated Tangut manuscript found at Khara-khoto, a ruined city in Inner Mongolia, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century and preserves a Chinese work in translation. Other finds include Buddhist scriptures, classic works of Confucian teaching, encyclopedias, military works, and literature.
